Isaiah declares the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, neither His ear heavy, that it cannot hear, but their iniquities have separated between them and their God, and their sins have hid His face from them, that He will not hear, since their hands are defiled with blood, and their fingers with “iniquity,” “avon” in Hebrew, their lips having spoken lies, their tongue having muttered perverseness.
Isaiah describes how none calls for justice, nor any pleads for truth, they trust in vanity, and speak lies, they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, describing how their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood, their thoughts being thoughts of iniquity, wasting and destruction being in their paths, the way of peace they do not know, and there is no judgment in their goings, therefore judgment is far from them, neither does justice overtake them.
Isaiah describes God seeing that there was no man, and wondering that there was no intercessor, therefore His own arm brought salvation to Him, and His righteousness sustained Him, He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation upon His head, He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak, according to their deeds, accordingly He will repay, fury to His adversaries, recompense to His enemies, closing with a beautiful messianic promise, “So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.”
Isaiah’s careful diagnosis, that sin itself creates the genuine barrier between people and God rather than any limitation in God’s own power or willingness to hear, redirects responsibility appropriately toward human choice rather than divine inadequacy. This chapter’s striking image, God Himself putting on righteousness as armor because no human intercessor could be found, reveals the genuine gravity of humanity’s need and God’s own dramatic, personal response to meet it.
