Isaiah laments the righteous overlooked amid idolatry while promising comfort for the contrite. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Isaiah 57.
Isaiah observes that the righteous perishes, and no man lays it to heart, and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come, he shall enter into “peace,” “shalom” in Hebrew, they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness, urging the sons of the sorceress to draw near, the seed of the adulterer and the whore.
Isaiah confronts their idolatry directly, asking against whom they sport themselves, against whom they make a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue, describing their inflaming themselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks, describing how among the smooth stones of the stream is their portion, even them is their lot, to them they have poured a drink offering, they have offered a meat offering, should God receive comfort in these.
Isaiah delivers God’s response, “I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones,” describing how He will not contend forever, neither will He always be angry, for the spirit should fail before Him, and the souls which He has made, since for the iniquity of his covetousness He was angry, and smote him, He hid Himself, and was angry, yet He will heal him, lead him also, and restore comforts to him, closing with the observation, “There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked,” this chapter’s blend of honest confrontation and genuine, tender promise reflecting God’s consistent character throughout the entire book.
Isaiah’s beautiful declaration, God dwells in the high and holy place, yet also with the contrite and humble spirit, reveals that genuine divine presence extends remarkably to the humblest, most broken hearts rather than remaining confined to transcendent majesty alone. His observation that the righteous often perish unnoticed offers honest acknowledgment that faithful people’s genuine value frequently goes unrecognized by those around them during their own lifetime.
