Isaiah urges Zion to awake, awake, put on her strength, putting on her beautiful garments, since henceforth there shall no more come into her the uncircumcised and the unclean, urging Jerusalem to shake herself from the dust, arise, and sit down, loosing herself from the bands of her neck, O captive daughter of Zion, declaring famously, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the “feet,” “regel” in Hebrew, “of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace… that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!”
Isaiah describes the watchmen lifting up their voice, with the voice together they shall sing, since they shall see eye to eye when the Lord shall bring again Zion, urging them to break forth into joy, sing together, waste places of Jerusalem, since the Lord has comforted His people, He has redeemed Jerusalem, the Lord has made bare His holy arm in the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of their God, urging them to depart, go out from there, touch no unclean thing, be clean, since the Lord will go before them, and the God of Israel will be their rereward.
Isaiah introduces the servant with startling, unexpected imagery, “Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high,” yet describing how his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men, so shall he sprinkle many nations, kings shutting their mouths at him, since that which had not been told them shall they see, and that which they had not heard shall they consider, this startling combination of exaltation and marring establishing the dramatic tension the following chapter will resolve, revealing the servant’s suffering as ultimately purposeful rather than merely tragic.
Isaiah’s beautiful declaration, how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news, elevates the simple act of sharing genuinely good news to something worthy of poetic celebration, since such news genuinely deserves real gratitude and honor. This chapter’s startling combination of the servant’s exaltation alongside his marred, disfigured appearance sets up profound tension the following chapter’s extraordinary prophecy will powerfully, movingly resolve.
