Isaiah records God asking where the bill of the mother’s divorcement is, with which He has put her away, or which of His creditors is it to whom He has sold them, asking why, when He came, was there no man, when He called, was there none to answer, describing how His hand is not shortened, that it cannot redeem, nor does He lack “power,” “koach” in Hebrew, to deliver.
Isaiah records the servant declaring, “The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary… he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting,” describing genuine, willing, costly suffering.
Isaiah records the servant’s confident trust despite this suffering, “For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed… he is near that justifieth me… behold, the Lord GOD will help me,” urging whoever fears the Lord, and obeys the voice of His servant, who walks in darkness and has no light, to trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God, closing with a warning against those who kindle a fire and compass themselves about with sparks, that they shall lie down in sorrow.
The servant’s willing acceptance of suffering, giving his back to those who struck him and not hiding his face from shame, models genuine, costly obedience offered even when it involves real personal cost and humiliation. His confident declaration, I have set my face like flint, since the Lord God will help me, shows that genuine trust can produce real courage and steadfastness even while enduring genuinely difficult, undeserved treatment.
