Isaiah records the servant declaring, “The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name,” describing how he made his mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of His hand He has hidden him, and made him a polished shaft, in His “quiver,” “ashpah” in Hebrew, He has hidden him, saying to him, “Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”
Isaiah describes the servant’s expanded mission, God saying it is too light a thing that he should be His servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel, so He will give him also for a light to the Gentiles, that he may be His salvation to the end of the earth, this mission extending Israel’s calling to encompass the salvation of the entire world.
Isaiah delivers God’s tender assurance, “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands,” promising Zion’s walls are continually before Him, describing how kings shall be their nursing fathers, and their queens their nursing mothers, closing with the promise that even if the mighty should be taken away, or the lawful captive delivered, God will contend with him who contends with them, and He will save Zion’s children.
Isaiah’s tender image, engraved upon the palms of God’s hands, offers one of Scripture’s most intimate pictures of divine remembrance, even more reliable than a nursing mother’s natural devotion to her own child. This chapter’s expansion of the servant’s mission, too small a thing merely to restore Israel, now extending as a light to all Gentiles, reveals God’s redemptive purposes reaching genuinely toward the salvation of the entire world.
