Isaiah describes Bel bowing down, Nebo stooping, their idols being upon the beasts, and upon the cattle, the things they carried being heavy loaded, a burden to the weary beast, they stooping, they bowing down together, not being able to deliver the burden, but themselves going into “captivity,” “shevi” in Hebrew. Isaiah contrasts this with the true God, who has carried His people from the belly, and borne them from the womb, promising even to their old age He is He, and even to gray hairs He will carry them, He has made, and He will bear, He will carry, and will deliver them, asking to whom they will liken Him, and make Him equal, and compare Him, that they may be like, describing idols that lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, hiring a goldsmith, and he makes it a god, they fall down, yes, they worship it, bearing it upon the shoulder, carrying it, and setting it in its place, and it stands, from its place it shall not remove, though one cries to it, yet it cannot answer. Isaiah urges them to remember this, and show themselves men, bringing it again to mind, transgressors, remembering the former things of old, since He is God, and there is none else, He is God, and there is none like Him, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things not yet done, saying His counsel shall stand, and He will do all His pleasure, calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man who executes His counsel from a far country, He has spoken it, He will also bring it to pass, He has purposed it, He will also do it, closing with a declaration to the stouthearted, who are far from righteousness, that He brings near His righteousness, it shall not be far off, and His salvation shall not tarry, and He will place salvation in Zion for Israel His glory.
This chapter’s memorable contrast, lifeless idols requiring beasts to carry their heavy weight versus the living God who carries His people Himself, illustrates the fundamental difference between burdensome, powerless religion and genuine, sustaining relationship with the true God. Its promise that God will carry His people even to old age and gray hairs offers real comfort that divine faithfulness extends reliably through every season of life, including its final years.
