Isaiah declares God’s tender word, “Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee,” describing Israel as precious in His sight, and honorable, and that He has loved them.
Isaiah declares God is bringing His sons from far, and His daughters from the ends of the earth, everyone who is called by His name, whom He has created for His “glory,” “kavod” in Hebrew, whom He has formed, yes, whom He has made, declaring, “Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me… I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.”
Isaiah reminds them not to remember the former things, nor consider the things of old, since He will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth, He will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, describing how the beast of the field shall honor Him, the dragons and the owls, because He gives waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to His people, His chosen, yet reminding Israel that they have not called upon Him, but have been weary of Him, and burdened Him with their sins, closing with the promise, “I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins,” this chapter’s tender assurance and honest acknowledgment of Israel’s failure together demonstrating both God’s genuine forgiveness and their genuine need for it.
Isaiah’s beautiful assurance, when you pass through the waters I will be with you, and through the fire you shall not be burned, offers genuine, comprehensive comfort promising God’s presence through every kind of overwhelming difficulty imaginable. His declaration, I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake, reveals forgiveness rooted ultimately in God’s own gracious character rather than in anything the recipient could ever earn or deserve.
