Isaiah records that in those days Hezekiah was sick unto death, and Isaiah the prophet came to him, telling him to set his house in order, since he shall die, and not live, Hezekiah turning his face to the wall, and praying to the Lord, “Remember now, O LORD, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight,” weeping with a great “weeping,” “bekhi” in Hebrew.
Isaiah records that before he had gone out into the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him, telling him to return and tell Hezekiah that the Lord has heard his prayer, seen his tears, and will add to his days fifteen years, delivering him and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, giving a sign that the shadow on the sundial of Ahaz should return backward ten degrees, which it did.
Isaiah records the writing of Hezekiah, king of Judah, when he had been sick, and recovered from his sickness, describing his own reflections, that he said he should go to the gates of the grave, being deprived of the residue of his years, believing he would not see the Lord in the land of the living, describing his life as being cut off like a weaver, God consuming him from day to day, yet declaring that the living, the living, he shall praise God, as he does this day, the father to the children making known God’s truth, closing with the observation that the Lord was ready to save him, therefore they will sing his songs to the stringed instruments all the days of their life in the house of the Lord.
Hezekiah’s earnest prayer, recalling his faithful walk before God, combined with genuine weeping, demonstrates that even righteous, faithful people can appropriately plead honestly with God during genuine crisis rather than merely accepting difficult news passively. His declaration, the living, the living, he shall praise you, captures genuine, grateful appreciation for the gift of continued life that often only becomes fully apparent after facing genuine mortality.
