Isaiah describes sweeping judgment against the nations and specifically against Edom. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Isaiah 34.
Isaiah calls the nations near to hear, and the people to hearken, letting the earth hear, and all that is in it, the world, and all things that come forth from it, since the indignation of the Lord is upon all nations, and His “fury,” “chemah” in Hebrew, upon all their armies, He has utterly destroyed them, He has delivered them to the slaughter.
Isaiah describes their slain also being cast out, and their stink coming up out of their carcasses, the mountains being melted with their blood, all the host of heaven being dissolved, and the heavens being rolled together as a scroll, and all their host falling down, as the leaf falls off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree, describing how God’s sword shall be bathed in heaven, and shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of His curse, to judgment.
Isaiah describes Edom’s land becoming burning pitch, its dust turning into brimstone, and its land becoming burning pitch, it not being quenched night nor day, its smoke going up forever, from generation to generation it shall lie waste, describing how the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it, the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it, and God shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness, thorns coming up in its palaces, nettles and brambles in its fortresses, it being a habitation of dragons, and a court for owls, closing with the observation that God’s mouth has commanded, and His spirit has gathered them, He has cast the lot for them, and His hand has divided it to them by line, this extensive, vivid judgment against Edom illustrating the genuine seriousness of persistent hostility against God’s people.
This chapter’s sweeping, cosmic judgment imagery, heavens rolled together like a scroll and stars falling like withered leaves, demonstrates prophetic literature’s genuine capacity to communicate judgment’s real severity through powerful, almost apocalyptic language. Its extensive, specific judgment against Edom shows that persistent, sustained hostility against God’s people carried genuine, serious consequence throughout Israel’s prophetic tradition.
