Isaiah pronounces woe to the spoiler who was not spoiled, and to him who deals treacherously though they did not deal treacherously with him, describing how when he ceases to spoil, he shall be spoiled, and when he makes an end to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with him, pleading, “O LORD, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee: be thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of “trouble,” “tsarah” in Hebrew.
Isaiah describes how at the noise of the tumult the people fled, at the lifting up of Himself the nations were scattered, and their spoil gathered like the gathering of the caterpillar, as the running to and fro of locusts he shall run upon them, the Lord being exalted, for He dwells on high, He has filled Zion with judgment and righteousness, describing how wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of their times, and strength of salvation, the fear of the Lord being their treasure.
Isaiah asks who among them shall dwell with the devouring fire, who among them shall dwell with everlasting burnings, answering that he who walks righteously, and speaks uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes his hands from holding bribes, who stops his ears from hearing of blood, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil, he shall dwell on high, describing how their eyes shall see the king in his beauty, they shall behold the land that is very far off, closing with a beautiful vision of Zion, “Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities: thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down… but there the glorious LORD will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams,” declaring that the Lord is their judge, the Lord is their lawgiver, the Lord is their king, He will save them.
Isaiah’s urgent plea, be our arm every morning, our salvation in time of trouble, captures genuine daily dependence on God’s strength rather than mere occasional or crisis-only appeal. His beautiful climactic declaration, the Lord is our judge, our lawgiver, our king, He will save us, offers comprehensive confidence that every essential need for genuine security and justice finds its complete answer in God alone.
