Isaiah declares, “Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment. And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land,” describing how the eyes of those who see shall not be dim, and the ears of those who hear shall hearken, the heart also of the rash understanding “knowledge,” “da’at” in Hebrew.
Isaiah describes how the vile person shall no more be called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful, since the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice hypocrisy, and to utter error against the Lord, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail, urging the women who are at ease to rise up and hear his voice, the careless daughters to give ear to his speech, warning that many days and years they shall be troubled, since the harvest shall fail.
Isaiah describes coming judgment upon the land of his people, thorns and briers coming up, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city, the palaces being forsaken, the multitude of the city being left, until the spirit is poured upon them from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is counted for a forest, judgment dwelling in the wilderness, and righteousness remaining in the fruitful field, closing with a beautiful promise, “And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation,” this chapter’s contrast between complacent ease and genuine righteousness reinforcing the section’s larger call to authentic, wholehearted devotion.
Isaiah’s beautiful image of a righteous king as a hiding place from the wind and a shadow from the heat offers a genuinely comforting picture of what godly leadership should provide, real shelter and protection rather than mere authority over others. His famous declaration, the work of righteousness shall be peace, connects genuine ethical living directly to lasting communal wellbeing rather than treating them as separate, unrelated concerns.
