Isaiah pronounces woe to the rebellious children, who take counsel, but not of Him, and who cover with a covering, but not of His spirit, that they may add sin to sin, who walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at His mouth, to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt, describing how the strength of Pharaoh shall be their shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt their “confusion,” “kelimah” in Hebrew. Isaiah describes this as a rebellious people, lying children, children who will not hear the law of the Lord, who say to the seers, do not see, and to the prophets, do not prophesy right things to us, speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits, urging them to get out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before them, declaring, “For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.” Isaiah offers a beautiful promise despite this rebellion, “And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him,” describing how the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem, they shall weep no more, being very gracious to them at the voice of their cry, when He shall hear it, He will answer them, describing how their ears shall hear a word behind them, saying, “This is the way, walk ye in it,” when they turn to the right hand, and when they turn to the left, closing with a description of the Lord’s glorious voice being heard, and the lighting down of His arm being seen, with the indignation of His anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, this chapter’s blend of sharp rebuke and genuine, patient grace capturing God’s consistent character throughout Isaiah’s entire extensive prophecy.
Isaiah’s beautiful declaration, the Lord waits that He may be gracious to you, blessed are all who wait for Him, reveals genuine divine patience even amid Judah’s persistent rebellion and misplaced trust in foreign alliances. His promise of hearing a word behind them saying, this is the way, walk in it, offers real comfort that genuine guidance remains available for those willing to listen, even after a long history of ignoring wiser counsel.
