Isaiah offers a song celebrating trust in God and anticipating resurrection for the dead. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Isaiah 26.
Isaiah describes a song sung in the land of Judah, “We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks. Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in,” declaring famously, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect “peace,” “shalom” in Hebrew, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee,” urging everyone to trust in the Lord forever, since in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.
Isaiah describes how the Lord brings down those who dwell on high, the lofty city He lays it low, He lays it low even to the ground, He brings it even to the dust, the foot shall tread it down, even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the needy, describing how in the way of God’s judgments they have waited for Him, the desire of their soul being to His name, and to the remembrance of Him, describing how with their soul they have desired Him in the night, seeking Him earnestly, since when His judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.
Isaiah prays for the Lord’s people, acknowledging other lords beside Him have had dominion over them, but by Him only will they make mention of His name, promising they are dead, they shall not live, they are deceased, they shall not rise, therefore He has visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish, but declaring famously, “Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead,” closing with an invitation for God’s people to enter into their chambers, and shut their doors about them, hiding themselves for a little moment, until the indignation is overpast, since the Lord comes out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.
Isaiah’s beautiful promise, you will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, offers a timeless formula for genuine, settled peace, sustained focus on God rather than shifting circumstances or anxious calculation. This chapter’s striking resurrection declaration, your dead shall live, my dead body shall rise, provides further Old Testament anticipation of the resurrection hope that would eventually find its complete fulfillment in Christ.
