Isaiah declares, “O LORD, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth,” describing how God has made a city a heap, a defenced city a ruin, therefore the strong people shall glorify Him, the city of the terrible nations shall fear Him, since He has been a “strength,” “maoz” in Hebrew, to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat.
Isaiah describes how in this mountain the Lord of hosts shall make to all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined, and He will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the veil that is spread over all nations, declaring famously, “He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.”
Isaiah closes declaring it shall be said in that day, “Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation,” describing how the hand of the Lord shall rest in this mountain, and Moab shall be trodden down under Him, even as straw is trodden down for the dunghill, God spreading forth His hands in the midst of them, as he who swims spreads forth his hands to swim, laying low their pride together with the spoils of their hands, this beautiful chapter’s central promise of death’s eventual, complete defeat offering some of Scripture’s earliest and most profound hope for genuine resurrection victory.
Isaiah’s magnificent promise, He will swallow up death in victory, and the Lord will wipe away tears from off all faces, offers one of the Old Testament’s clearest, earliest anticipations of resurrection hope, later echoed directly in Revelation’s own vision of the new creation. This chapter’s beautiful feast imagery, celebrated openly by all nations rather than Israel alone, reinforces the consistent theme of God’s redemptive purposes extending genuinely beyond any single people group.
