The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Rivers” it comes from the Hebrew Word “nahar” which means “rivers.”
Isaiah addresses a distant land with a message about God’s coming, decisive intervention. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Isaiah 18.
Isaiah addresses woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia, sending ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, urging swift messengers to go to a nation scattered and peeled, terrible from their beginning, a nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the “rivers,” “nahar” in Hebrew, have spoiled.
Isaiah declares all the inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, shall see when he lifts up an ensign on the mountains, and when he blows a trumpet, they shall hear, describing how the Lord said to him, He will take His rest, and will consider in His dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs, and like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.
Isaiah describes how before the harvest, when the bud is perfect, and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, He shall both cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks, and take away and cut down the branches, they shall be left together for the fowls of the mountains, and for the beasts of the earth, the fowls shall summer upon them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them, closing with a promise that in that time shall the present be brought to the Lord of hosts from this scattered and peeled people, to the place of the name of the Lord of hosts, Mount Zion, this brief, somewhat enigmatic chapter concluding with an unexpected promise of eventual worship offered even from this distant, formerly hostile nation.
This somewhat enigmatic chapter’s ultimate turn toward worship, a scattered and formerly threatening distant nation eventually bringing tribute to Zion, reveals God’s redemptive purposes extending even to peoples that once seemed genuinely hostile or entirely foreign to His covenant people. Its patient description of God calmly watching and waiting before decisive action offers a memorable picture of sovereign, unhurried timing amid apparent political turmoil.
