Hosea is instructed to set the trumpet to his mouth, for the enemy shall come like an eagle against the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed His covenant, and trespassed against His “law,” “torah” in Hebrew, describing how Israel shall cry to Him, “My God, we know thee,” yet Israel has cast off the thing that is good, the enemy shall pursue him.
Hosea describes how they have set up kings, but not by Him, they have made princes, and He did not know it, of their silver and their gold have they made idols for themselves, that they may be cut off, describing Samaria’s calf being cast off, His anger being kindled against them, asking how long it will be before they attain to innocency, since from Israel this calf came, the workman made it, therefore it is not God.
Hosea declares famously, “For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind,” describing how it has no stalk, the bud yielding no meal, and even if it yields, strangers shall swallow it up, describing how Israel is swallowed up, now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure, since they have gone up to Assyria, a wild donkey alone by himself, Ephraim having hired lovers, closing with the observation that though they hired among the nations, now He will gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes, since Ephraim has made many altars to sin, altars have become to him to sin.
Hosea’s memorable warning, they have sown the wind and shall reap the whirlwind, uses vivid agricultural imagery to illustrate how disproportionate consequence often follows seemingly manageable, small acts of persistent unfaithfulness. His pointed critique of self-appointed kings and self-made idols, set up without genuine divine sanction, reveals how thoroughly Israel had substituted human initiative for genuine, submitted dependence on God.
