Hosea urges his people, “Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up. After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight,” urging them to follow on to “know,” “yada” in Hebrew, the Lord, His going forth being prepared as the morning, and He shall come to them as the rain, as the latter and former rain to the earth.
Hosea records God’s frustrated response, asking what He shall do to Ephraim, what He shall do to Judah, since their goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goes away, therefore He has hewed them by the prophets, He has slain them by the words of His mouth, and His judgments are as the light that goes forth, declaring famously, “For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings,” describing how they, like men, have transgressed the covenant, there they have dealt treacherously against Him.
Hosea describes a city of those who work iniquity, and is polluted with blood, as troops of robbers wait for a man, so the company of priests murder in the way by consent, since they commit lewdness, describing how in the house of Israel he has seen a horrible thing, the whoredom of Ephraim being there, Israel being defiled, this chapter’s memorable declaration about mercy over mere sacrifice offering a foundational insight into what genuine worship actually requires, later quoted directly by Jesus Himself in the Gospels.
