God expresses tender, fatherly grief over Israel’s persistent unfaithfulness despite His genuine love. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Hosea 11.
Hosea records God’s tender remembrance, “When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt,” describing how as they called them, so they went from them, they sacrificed to Baalim, and burned incense to graven images, yet He taught Ephraim also to walk, taking them by their “arms,” “zeroa” in Hebrew, but they did not know that He healed them.
Hosea describes how He drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love, and He was to them as those who take off the yoke on their jaws, and He laid meat to them, yet they refuse to return to Him, and the sword shall abide on their cities, and shall consume their branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels, His people being bent to backsliding from Him.
Hosea delivers God’s remarkable, anguished expression of love, “How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel?… mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together. I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger… for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee,” describing how they shall walk after the Lord, He shall roar like a lion, when He shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west, closing with the observation that Ephraim compasses Him about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit, but Judah yet rules with God, and is faithful with the saints.
God’s remarkable, anguished question, how can I give you up, my heart recoils within me, offers one of Scripture’s most tender expressions of divine love wrestling genuinely with the tension between righteous judgment and persistent, fatherly compassion. His tender memory of teaching Ephraim to walk and drawing them with cords of love reveals a genuinely intimate, nurturing relationship far surpassing mere distant, formal covenant obligation.
