Hosea describes Israel as an empty “vine,” “gephen” in Hebrew, he brings forth fruit for himself, according to the multitude of his fruit he has increased the altars, according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images, describing how their heart is divided, now they shall be found faulty, He shall break down their altars, He shall spoil their images.
Hosea describes how they shall say they have no king, because they did not fear the Lord, what then should a king do to them, describing the calf of Bethaven, the inhabitants of Samaria being afraid because of it, its glory being departed from it, urging his readers to sow to themselves in righteousness, reap in mercy, and break up their fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord, till He comes and rains righteousness upon them.
Hosea describes how they have plowed wickedness, they have reaped iniquity, they have eaten the fruit of lies, because they trusted in their own way, in the multitude of their mighty men, therefore a tumult shall arise among their people, and all their fortresses shall be spoiled, closing with a striking comparison to Shalman spoiling Betharbel in the day of battle, the mother being dashed in pieces upon her children, urging them to remember this coming judgment against Bethel, since because of their great wickedness, their king shall be cut off as the foam upon the water, this chapter’s central agricultural metaphor urging genuine, deliberate cultivation of righteousness rather than continued reliance on empty, self-serving religious practice.
Hosea’s memorable exhortation, sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of steadfast love, break up your fallow ground, offers genuine, practical agricultural imagery for pursuing intentional spiritual renewal rather than passively hoping for automatic, effortless improvement. His observation that Israel trusted in their own way and the multitude of their mighty men exposes self-reliance as the genuine underlying cause behind their persistent unfaithfulness and eventual downfall.
