The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Whoredom” it comes from the Hebrew Word “zenunim” which means “whoredom, unfaithfulness.”

Hosea, son of Beeri, receives the word of the Lord in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel, the Lord instructing him, “Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great “whoredom,” “zenunim” in Hebrew, departing from the LORD,” so he takes Gomer, and she conceives, and bears him a son.
Hosea is told to name this son Jezreel, since God will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause the kingdom of the house of Israel to cease, breaking the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel, Gomer conceiving again, and bearing a daughter, whom he is told to name Loruhamah, meaning not having obtained mercy, since God will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel.
Hosea describes Gomer weaning Loruhamah, then conceiving and bearing a son, whom he is told to name Loammi, meaning not my people, since they are not His people, and He will not be their God, closing with a remarkable, sudden shift toward hope, that yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered, and in the place where it was said to them, “Ye are not my people,” it shall be said, “Ye are the sons of the living God,” this striking chapter using Hosea’s own difficult marriage as a living, embodied illustration of Israel’s unfaithfulness and God’s promised, eventual restoration.
Hosea’s remarkable, difficult calling, marrying an unfaithful woman as a living parable, demonstrates prophetic obedience requiring genuine, costly personal sacrifice extending even into the most intimate areas of ordinary life. This chapter’s names given to his children, communicating judgment through their very identities, then dramatically reversed with promised restoration, illustrates how God’s message could be embodied through an entire family’s lived experience.
