The writer compares this to the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and brings forth herbs appropriate for those by whom it is dressed, receiving blessing from God, but that which bears thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing, whose end is to be burned, though he is persuaded better things of his readers, and things that accompany salvation, since God is not unrighteous to forget their work and labor of love.
The writer desires that every one of them show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope to the end, that they not be slothful, but followers of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises, recalling how God, making promise to Abraham, swore by Himself, since He could swear by no greater, promising to bless him and multiply him, and so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise, describing this hope as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, entering into that within the veil, where Jesus, the forerunner, has entered for them, made a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek, a fitting close to this challenging chapter offering genuine hope grounded in God’s own unchangeable promise and oath.
