The writer warns lest, a promise being left of entering into God’s rest, any of them should seem to come short of it, since the gospel was preached to them as well as to the wilderness generation, but the word preached did not profit them, since it was not mixed with faith in those who heard it, for those who have believed do enter into “rest,” “katapausis” in Greek, as He said, “So I sware in my wrath, they shall not enter into my rest,” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
The writer argues that since it remains that some must enter in, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter in because of unbelief, He again limits a certain day, saying in David, “To day,” after so long a time, “To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts,” concluding that if Joshua had given them rest, God would not afterward have spoken of another day, so there remains therefore a rest for the people of God, since he who has entered into His rest has also ceased from his own works, as God did from His.
The writer urges his readers to labor to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of unbelief, describing the word of God as quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, being a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart, neither is there any creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and opened to the eyes of Him with whom believers have to do, closing with the encouragement to come boldly to the throne of grace, that they may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need, since they have a great high priest who was in all points tempted like as they are, yet without sin.
This chapter’s memorable description of God’s word as living, sharp, and able to discern the very thoughts and intents of the heart reveals Scripture’s genuinely active, penetrating power rather than merely passive historical record or information. Its invitation to come boldly to the throne of grace, precisely because we have a sympathetic high priest who understands temptation firsthand, offers genuine confidence for approaching God honestly rather than fearfully.
