The writer urges his holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, to consider the Apostle and High Priest of their profession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house, describing Christ as counted worthy of more glory than Moses, as he who built the house has more honor than the house itself.
The writer explains that Moses was faithful as a servant, for a “testimony,” “marturion” in Greek, of the things which would be spoken after, but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house believers are, if they hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end, warning, “To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness.”
The writer warns his readers to take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of them an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God, urging them to exhort one another daily, while it is called today, lest any of them be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin, since they are made partakers of Christ, if they hold the beginning of their confidence steadfast to the end, recalling how those who came out of Egypt with Moses provoked God, so that He swore in His wrath they should not enter into His rest, closing with the observation that they could not enter in because of unbelief, a sobering warning drawn directly from Israel’s own wilderness failure.
This chapter’s careful comparison, honoring Moses genuinely while still establishing Christ’s greater glory as builder rather than merely servant within the house, models respectful engagement with previous revelation rather than dismissive rejection of it. Its urgent call to exhort one another daily reveals that maintaining genuine faith was never intended as a purely individual endeavor, but requires active, ongoing mutual encouragement within genuine community.
