The writer urges brotherly love to continue, not to forget to entertain strangers, since some have entertained angels unaware, remembering those in bonds as bound with them, and those who suffer adversity, marriage being honorable in all, and the bed undefiled, warning against covetousness, being content with such things as they have, since God has said, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee,” so that they may boldly say, “The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” The writer urges them to remember those who have the rule over them, who have spoken to them the word of God, whose faith they should follow, considering the end of their conversation, declaring, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever,” warning against being carried about with divers and strange doctrines, since it is good that the heart be established with “grace,” “charis” in Greek, not with meats, which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.
The writer describes how believers have an altar whereof those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat, since the bodies of beasts whose blood is brought into the sanctuary are burned outside the camp, so Jesus also suffered outside the gate, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, urging his readers to go forth to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach, since here they have no continuing city, but seek one to come, urging them by Him to offer the sacrifice of praise continually, the fruit of their lips giving thanks to His name, to do good and to communicate not to forget, since with such sacrifices God is well pleased, closing with instructions to obey those who have rule over them, requests for prayer, and his familiar benediction, “Now the God of peace… make you perfect in every good work to do his will,” ending this letter with warm personal greetings.
