God tells Noah to enter the ark with his family, seven days before the rain begins. Noah gathers clean and unclean animals by pairs, exactly as instructed. Then, on the day the flood begins, something remarkable happens. “The LORD shut him in.” The Hebrew word for shut is “sagar,” meaning to close something securely. Noah does not seal the door himself. God does it for him.
The rain falls for forty days and forty nights, but the text also describes “the fountains of the great deep” breaking open, a flood coming from below as well as above. The waters rise until they cover even the highest mountains. Every living thing outside the ark perishes. “And Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.”
The text is precise about the timing too. Noah is six hundred years old when the flood begins, and the waters continue to rise for a hundred and fifty days before they finally start to recede. Every bird, every creeping thing, everything with the breath of life outside that one boat, is destroyed. It is a sobering picture of how completely sin had corrupted the earth, and how completely God was willing to start over rather than let it stand.
The detail that God Himself shut the door is easy to miss, but it says everything. Noah’s safety did not depend on his own strength to seal himself in. It depended on God’s protection. When God shuts a door of safety around His people, nothing can force it open.
