As the famine continues, Jacob’s family runs out of grain again, and Judah reminds his father that they cannot return to Egypt without Benjamin. Judah personally guarantees Benjamin’s safety, and Jacob reluctantly agrees, sending along gifts and double the money, and praying, “God Almighty give you mercy before the man.” The Hebrew word for mercy here is “rachamim,” describing deep, tender compassion.
When the brothers arrive with Benjamin, Joseph is overwhelmed with emotion at seeing him, and has to leave the room to weep privately again. He invites all eleven brothers to dine with him, seating them by birth order, which astonishes them, and giving Benjamin five times as much food as the others.
The brothers eat and drink freely with Joseph, still unaware of his true identity, as the tension of the story continues to build toward its resolution.
It is also worth noting how far Judah has come by this chapter, willing to personally guarantee his youngest brother’s safety with his own life. This is the same brother who once proposed selling Joseph for silver. His growth becomes even more visible in the chapters that follow, as he steps forward again and again to protect Benjamin at real cost to himself.
Judah, once willing to sell Joseph for silver, now personally guarantees Benjamin’s safety with his own life. People genuinely can change. The same brother who once caused so much harm becomes the one protecting the family from further loss.
