Rachel, still childless, grows jealous of Leah and gives her servant Bilhah to Jacob to bear children on her behalf, following the same custom Sarah once used. Leah, no longer bearing children herself for a time, does the same with her servant Zilpah. Between Leah, Rachel, and their two servants, Jacob eventually fathers eleven sons and at least one daughter, Dinah, before finally God “remembered Rachel,” and she bears a son of her own, Joseph.
The chapter also describes an extended and complicated arrangement between Jacob and Laban over wages. The Hebrew word for wages here is “sakar.” Jacob proposes taking only the speckled and spotted animals from the flock as his payment going forward, and through selective breeding and careful management, Jacob’s own flocks grow tremendously, while Laban’s prosperity declines.
It is also worth noting the emotional toll running underneath this entire chapter. Rachel cries out to Jacob, “Give me children, or else I die,” revealing real desperation behind the family rivalry. Leah, meanwhile, keeps hoping each new son will finally win Jacob’s affection. Neither sister’s deepest longing is fully satisfied by children alone, a reminder that human approval was never going to be the thing that filled what only God could truly meet.
This chapter shows a family shaped by jealousy, rivalry, and constant maneuvering, yet God is quietly building the twelve tribes of Israel through it all. God’s larger purposes moved forward even through a household full of tension and imperfect choices.
