GENESIS 29 ‐ “Jacob Serves for Two Wives”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Hated” it comes from the Hebrew Word “sane” which means “hated, unloved, disliked.”

Jacob the deceiver finally meets someone who can out-trick him. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 29.

Jacob arrives in Padanaram and meets Rachel, Laban’s younger daughter, at a well. He agrees to work for Laban seven years in exchange for Rachel’s hand in marriage. The years “seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.” On the wedding night, Laban secretly substitutes his older daughter Leah instead. Jacob discovers the deception only the next morning.

Laban justifies it by explaining that the younger daughter cannot be given in marriage before the elder, but agrees to let Jacob marry Rachel as well after finishing Leah’s bridal week, in exchange for another seven years of labor. Jacob loves Rachel more than Leah, and the text says, “the LORD saw that Leah was hated.” The Hebrew word for hated here, “sane,” reflects Leah’s painful position as the less-loved wife.

God opens Leah’s womb, and she bears four sons in succession, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, naming each one with hope that Jacob’s affection might grow.

It is worth remembering how ironic this moment is for Jacob specifically. He deceived his own father by pretending to be someone he was not, using darkness and disguise to secure a blessing meant for someone else. Now Laban uses that same darkness to substitute one daughter for another. Jacob spends fourteen years working off a debt created almost entirely by his own past behavior catching up with him.

Jacob deceived his own father to gain a blessing, and now he experiences deception firsthand from Laban. Yet God still noticed Leah’s pain in the middle of an unfair situation and blessed her directly. God pays attention to the overlooked person, even when everyone else’s attention is elsewhere.
