GENESIS 28 ‐ “Jacob’s Ladder”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Surely” it comes from the Hebrew Word “aken” which means “surely, truly, indeed.”

Running from his brother, alone in the wilderness, Jacob meets God in a dream. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 28.

Isaac blesses Jacob again before he leaves, sending him toward Padanaram to find a wife among Laban’s daughters. Along the way, Jacob stops for the night and uses a stone for a pillow. He dreams of a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, with angels ascending and descending on it. The Lord stands above it and repeats the covenant promise given to Abraham and Isaac, promising Jacob land, descendants, and His constant presence, “I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest.”

Jacob wakes in awe and says, “Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.” The Hebrew word for “surely” here is “aken,” expressing genuine astonishment. He names the place Bethel, meaning “house of God,” and sets up the stone as a pillar, pouring oil on it.

Jacob then makes a vow, promising that if God provides for him and brings him safely home, the Lord will be his God, and he will give back a tenth of everything God gives him.

It is also worth noting the tone of God’s promise in this dream. He does not simply repeat what He told Abraham and Isaac. He adds something deeply personal for Jacob specifically, “I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land.” Jacob is leaving home utterly alone, and God meets that isolation with a promise of constant presence.

Jacob was running from the consequences of his own scheming when God met him anyway, in the middle of nowhere, with an enormous promise. God’s presence is not limited to places that feel holy. He shows up in the exact spot where we least expect Him, often in our lowest moments.
