The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Birthright” it comes from the Hebrew Word “bekorah” which means “the inheritance rights of the firstborn.”
One bowl of stew, and a birthright is gone forever. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 25.
Abraham marries again after Sarah’s death and has more children, but he leaves everything he owns to Isaac before he dies at 175 years old. Isaac and Ishmael bury him together in the cave of Machpelah beside Sarah. The chapter also records Ishmael’s descendants, twelve princes who become great nations, fulfilling God’s earlier promise to Hagar.
Isaac marries Rebekah, who struggles with childlessness until Isaac prays for her. She becomes pregnant with twins who “struggled together within her,” so much that God tells her two nations are already forming in her womb, and that “the elder shall serve the younger.” Esau is born first, red and hairy, followed by Jacob, gripping his brother’s heel.
Years later, Esau returns from hunting exhausted and begs Jacob for some of his red stew. Jacob demands Esau’s birthright in exchange, the special inheritance rights of the firstborn son, called “bekorah” in Hebrew. Esau agrees without hesitation, and the text says plainly, “thus Esau despised his birthright.”
It is worth pausing on Rebekah’s pregnancy itself, since she is troubled enough by what she feels inside her that she goes directly to inquire of the Lord. God’s answer, “two nations are in thy womb,” reframes the sibling rivalry that follows as something far bigger than ordinary family tension. From before either twin took a breath, God had already declared how the larger story would unfold.
Esau traded something of lasting value for something that satisfied him for a moment. Jacob’s scheming does not look admirable here either, but God had already declared before either twin was born that His plan would move through Jacob. Even flawed choices could not undo what God had spoken.
