GENESIS 22 ‐ “The Test on Mount Moriah”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Provide” it comes from the Hebrew Word “ra’ah” which means “to see, to provide.”

God asks Abraham for the one thing that should be unthinkable. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 22.

God tests Abraham, telling him to take Isaac, “thine only son… whom thou lovest,” to the land of Moriah and offer him as a burnt offering. Abraham obeys without recorded protest, rising early the next morning to begin the journey. When Isaac asks where the lamb for the offering is, Abraham answers with remarkable faith. “God will provide himself a lamb.”

At the altar, Abraham binds Isaac and raises the knife, but an angel of the Lord stops him at the last moment, declaring that Abraham has proven he fears God, since he did not withhold his only son. A ram, caught in a nearby thicket, is offered in Isaac’s place. Abraham names that place “Jehovah-jireh,” meaning “the LORD will provide.” The Hebrew root behind this name is “ra’ah,” meaning to see or to provide.

God renews His covenant promise in the strongest terms yet, swearing by Himself that Abraham’s descendants will be as numerous as the stars, and that all nations will be blessed through his offspring, because Abraham obeyed God’s voice.

The location of this test is significant. Moriah is the same region where, centuries later, Solomon’s temple would be built, and where another sacrifice would ultimately take place. Abraham could not have known that connection, but the pattern he lived out, a father, a beloved son, a journey up a mountain, would echo through the rest of the Bible’s story in ways he never could have imagined.

This is the hardest test in Abraham’s life, and he passed it by trusting that God would provide, even before he knew how. The mountain where God stopped his hand became the same region where, generations later, another Son would carry wood up a hill and not be spared.
