God rests on the seventh day, not because He is tired, but to set a pattern of rest for His people. Genesis 2 then slows down to focus on day six. God forms man “of the dust of the ground,” and breathes “the breath of life” into him. Man becomes “a living soul.”
God places the man in the garden of Eden with one simple job, to “dress it and to keep it.” He may eat from any tree except one, “the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” God then says something surprising. “It is not good that the man should be alone.” He brings the animals to be named, but none of them are a fit companion.
So God causes a deep sleep to fall on the man, takes a rib, and builds it into a woman. The man responds with the Bible’s first recorded poem. “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh.” The chapter closes with marriage explained. A man leaves his parents and is joined to his wife, “and they shall be one flesh.” The Hebrew word for this fitting companion is “ezer,” meaning “a helper,” the same word often used for God Himself helping His people.
Genesis 2 shows that companionship was part of God’s design from the very start. He noticed what was missing before Adam even knew to ask, and He provided exactly what was needed. God still pays attention to what we lack.
