The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Righteous” it comes from the Hebrew Word “tsaddiq” which means “righteous, just, in right standing.”
Three strangers show up at Abraham’s tent, and one of them is not a stranger at all. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 18.
Abraham sees three men approaching and rushes to offer hospitality, washing their feet and preparing a meal. One of the visitors, speaking as the Lord Himself, promises that Sarah will have a son within the year. Sarah, listening from the tent, laughs quietly to herself, doubting it is possible at her age. God asks Abraham directly, “Is any thing too hard for the LORD?”
The men then turn toward Sodom, and the Lord reveals to Abraham that He is about to judge the city for its great wickedness. Abraham begins an extraordinary conversation, bargaining with God on behalf of any righteous people who might live there. “Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?” he asks. The Hebrew word for righteous is “tsaddiq.” God agrees that He will spare the city if even ten righteous people can be found there.
Abraham stops asking at ten, and the Lord departs.
Abraham’s bargaining with God over Sodom is remarkable for how far it goes and how far it does not. He starts at fifty righteous people and works his way down to ten, but he stops there, seemingly satisfied, or perhaps simply unwilling to press further. It shows a man who takes God’s justice seriously, while also trusting that whatever God ultimately decides will be right, even without fully understanding every detail in advance.
Abraham’s boldness in prayer is remarkable. He did not simply accept judgment as inevitable. He pleaded for mercy on behalf of others, and God listened to every request. Intercession, standing in the gap for other people, is something God clearly welcomes from those who trust Him.
