God appears to Abram again, this time renaming him Abraham, meaning “father of many nations.” He renames Sarai as well, calling her Sarah. God establishes circumcision as the sign of His covenant with Abraham’s household, a mark to be carried by every male descendant. When God tells Abraham that Sarah herself will bear the promised son, Abraham falls on his face and laughs, thinking to himself how a hundred-year-old man and a ninety-year-old woman could possibly have a child. The Hebrew word for laughed is “tsachaq,” the very root of the name Isaac, which means “he laughs.”
Abraham pleads on behalf of Ishmael, and God promises to bless Ishmael as well, making him into a great nation, though the covenant promise will continue specifically through Isaac, who will be born within the year.
Abraham obeys immediately, circumcising every male in his household that same day, including himself and Ishmael.
The covenant sign given here, circumcision, was to be applied not only to Abraham’s direct descendants but to every male in his household, including servants bought with money. This detail matters. From the very beginning, God’s covenant people were never defined by bloodline alone. Anyone brought into the household, by birth or otherwise, was included in the sign of the promise.
God’s promise seemed impossible by every human measure, and Abraham’s own laughter proves it. Yet the name Isaac would forever carry that laughter as a reminder. What looks impossible to us is often exactly where God is about to work.
