The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Bless” it comes from the Hebrew Word “barak” which means “to bless, to favor, to kneel in blessing.”
God asks one man to leave everything familiar behind. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 12.
God calls Abram to leave his country, his relatives, and his father’s house, for a land God will show him. Attached to this call is one of the most important promises in the Bible. “I will bless thee… and thou shalt be a blessing… and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” The Hebrew word for bless here is “barak,” and it echoes throughout the rest of Scripture.
Abram obeys, taking his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot with him into Canaan. God appears to him and promises this land to his descendants. Abram builds an altar in response. But a famine strikes, and Abram travels down to Egypt for relief.
Fearing for his life because Sarai is beautiful, Abram asks her to say she is his sister rather than his wife. Pharaoh takes Sarai into his house, but God strikes Pharaoh’s household with plagues. When Pharaoh discovers the deception, he sends Abram away with his wife and possessions intact.
It is also worth noting what Abram does at every stop along this journey. Wherever he goes, he builds an altar and calls on the name of the Lord, first near Bethel, and again after leaving Egypt. Even during a season marked by fear and failure, worship remains a constant thread running through Abram’s life, a habit that keeps drawing him back toward God even after his own missteps.
God’s call on Abram’s life was enormous, a promise to bless the whole world through his family. Yet Abram immediately shows he is a flawed man, capable of fear and deception. God’s plan never depended on Abram being perfect, only on Abram being willing to follow.
