Paul instructs believers to restore anyone caught in a fault gently, considering themselves, lest they too be tempted, and to “bear ye one another’s burdens,” “baros” in Greek, meaning a heavy weight, “and so fulfil the law of Christ.” He warns against anyone thinking too highly of themselves when they are actually nothing, and urges each person to examine their own work rather than comparing themselves to others, since everyone will bear their own individual load in the end.
Paul instructs that those being taught should share good things generously with their teachers, and warns solemnly, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” He explains that whoever sows to the flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but whoever sows to the Spirit will reap everlasting life from the Spirit, encouraging them not to grow weary in doing good, since they will reap a harvest in due season if they do not give up. He urges doing good especially toward fellow believers, though toward everyone as opportunity allows.
Paul closes writing a larger portion of this letter in his own handwriting, explaining that those insisting on circumcision simply want to make a good outward show and avoid persecution for the cross of Christ, and are not even genuinely keeping the law themselves, merely wanting to boast in the Galatians’ flesh. Paul insists he will boast in nothing except the cross of Christ, through which the world has been crucified to him, and he to the world, declaring that neither circumcision nor uncircumcision matters, but only “a new creature.” He closes praying peace and mercy on everyone who walks according to this principle, noting he bears in his own body “the marks of the Lord Jesus,” and closing with a simple, warm benediction of grace.
Paul’s closing instruction to bear one another’s burdens beautifully summarizes the practical outworking of everything he has argued throughout this entire letter. Freedom from the law was never meant to produce isolated independence, but genuine community, people carrying each other’s real, heavy weight through love rather than legalistic obligation.
