The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Gospel” it comes from the Greek Word “euangelion” which means “good news, gospel.”
Paul writes with real urgency to a church already drifting toward a dangerous distortion of the gospel. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Galatians 1.
Paul opens by identifying himself as an apostle “not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father,” immediately establishing his authority as directly from God rather than human appointment. He expresses genuine shock that the Galatians are so quickly turning away from the one who called them by grace, toward “another gospel,” “euangelion” in Greek, meaning good news, though Paul insists this is not really another gospel at all, just people troubling them and perverting the true gospel of Christ.
Paul delivers an extraordinarily strong warning, that even if he himself, or an angel from heaven, preached any gospel other than what they originally received, that person should be accursed, repeating this warning twice for emphasis. He explains he is not seeking to please people, since if he were still trying to please people, he would not be a servant of Christ.
Paul then recounts his own dramatic testimony, that he did not receive the gospel from any human source, but through direct revelation of Jesus Christ, reminding the Galatians of his former life fiercely persecuting the church and trying to destroy it. He explains that God, who set him apart from birth, called him by grace to reveal His Son in him, so that he might preach among the Gentiles, and that he did not immediately consult with anyone, but went first into Arabia. He recounts visiting Peter in Jerusalem three years later, and remaining largely unknown personally to the Judean churches, who simply heard that their former persecutor now preached the very faith he once tried to destroy, and glorified God because of him.
Paul’s fierce warning against any distorted gospel, even one supposedly delivered by an angel, shows just how seriously he treated the purity of the actual message of grace. His own dramatic transformation from persecutor to preacher gave him firsthand authority to recognize exactly how easily that same grace could be subtly corrupted by well-meaning but misguided teaching.
