Ezra lists the family heads who travel with him from Babylon during Artaxerxes’ reign, gathering them together at the river that runs to Ahava, where he discovers no Levites among the assembled company, and sends for capable men who successfully bring back Levites and Nethinims to join the journey.
Ezra proclaims a “fast,” “tsom” in Hebrew, at the river Ahava, to afflict themselves before God and seek from Him a right way for themselves, their children, and all their possessions, since Ezra was ashamed to request soldiers and horsemen from the king to protect them from enemies along the way, having already told the king that God’s hand is upon everyone who seeks Him for good. So they fast and beseech God, and He is entreated by them.
Ezra sets apart twelve leading priests and weighs out the silver, gold, and vessels entrusted to their care for the Lord’s house, charging them that they are holy to the Lord, and the vessels are holy also, urging them to watch and keep everything carefully until they can weigh it out before the chief priests, Levites, and family heads at Jerusalem. The company departs from the river Ahava and travels to Jerusalem, with the hand of their God upon them, delivering them from the hand of the enemy and from ambush along the way, arriving safely and resting three days before weighing out the silver, gold, and vessels precisely as entrusted, and offering burnt offerings to the God of Israel in grateful worship for this safe, remarkable journey.
Ezra’s decision to fast and pray for protection rather than requesting a royal military escort reflects genuine confidence that God’s hand alone would be sufficient, a conviction he had already publicly declared to the king. This dangerous, unescorted journey, completed safely, became a powerful testimony to everyone watching that trusting God can accomplish what armed protection alone could never guarantee.
