The prophets Haggai and Zechariah prophesy to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, and Zerubbabel and Jeshua rise up and begin building the house of God again, with these two prophets helping and encouraging them in this renewed “work,” “avodah” in Hebrew. Tattenai, governor of the region beyond the river, comes to investigate, asking who authorized them to build this house and finish this structure.
The Jewish elders answer confidently that they are servants of the God of heaven and earth, rebuilding a house originally built many years ago by a great king of Israel, which their fathers provoked God to anger, leading Him to give them into Nebuchadnezzar’s hand, who destroyed this house and carried the people captive to Babylon. They explain that Cyrus, in his first year, made a decree to rebuild this house of God and even returned the gold and silver vessels Nebuchadnezzar had taken, delivering them to Sheshbazzar, whom Cyrus appointed governor, commanding him to build this house on its original site.
Tattenai reports all this faithfully to Darius, requesting that a search be made in the king’s treasure house at Babylon to verify whether Cyrus truly issued such a decree, and asking for the king’s pleasure concerning this matter to be sent back to them. This careful, official inquiry, rather than immediately halting the work again, sets the stage for Darius’s eventual, decisive confirmation that will finally allow the temple’s construction to proceed without further interference.
The encouragement of Haggai and Zechariah proved essential in restarting work that fear and opposition had stalled for years, showing how vital prophetic encouragement can be in reviving discouraged, weary hands. The Jewish elders’ calm, confident explanation of their authority, rather than defensive anger, models how to respond to official scrutiny with honest transparency rather than fearful evasion.
