When the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin hear that the returning exiles are building a temple to the Lord God of Israel, they approach Zerubbabel and the family heads, offering to help build alongside them, claiming to seek their God just as the Israelites do. Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the leaders refuse this offer firmly, insisting that Israel alone will build the house for the Lord God of Israel, exactly as Cyrus commanded them.
Rebuffed, the surrounding peoples work to weaken the hands of Judah’s people and trouble them in building, hiring counselors against them throughout the reign of Cyrus and even into the reign of Ahasuerus, when they write an “accusation,” “sitnah” in Hebrew, against Judah’s inhabitants. Later, during Artaxerxes’ reign, officials write a letter claiming Jerusalem is a rebellious city that, if rebuilt, will refuse to pay tribute, toll, or custom, damaging the king’s revenue.
Artaxerxes searches the records, confirms Jerusalem’s history of rebellion against previous kings, and commands the work stopped until he gives further command. The officials go quickly to Jerusalem and force the Jews to cease work by force and power, and the work on God’s house at Jerusalem remains halted until the second year of Darius, king of Persia, a lengthy, discouraging delay caused by persistent, deliberate opposition from hostile neighbors determined to prevent Judah’s restoration.
The determined opposition Judah faces here shows that rebuilding what God had promised to restore rarely happens without real resistance, sometimes through outright hostility and other times through deceptively friendly offers designed to compromise the work from within. Zerubbabel’s firm refusal to accept help from those with mixed, questionable motives protected the integrity of a project meant to honor God alone.
