Ezekiel is instructed to set his face toward the mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them, saying, “Ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD,” describing how God will bring a sword upon them, and destroy their high places, their altars being laid desolate, and their “images,” “chammanim” in Hebrew, meaning sun images or idols, being broken, and He will cast down their slain men before their idols.
Ezekiel describes how in all their dwelling places the cities shall be laid waste, and the high places shall be desolate, that their altars may be laid waste and made desolate, and their idols may be broken and cease, and their images may be cut down, and their works may be abolished, describing how the slain shall fall in the midst of them, and they shall know that He is the Lord.
Ezekiel describes a remnant who shall escape the sword among the nations, when they shall be scattered through the countries, and those who escape shall remember Him among the nations where they shall be carried captive, since He is broken with their whorish heart, which has departed from Him, and with their eyes, which go a whoring after their idols, and they shall loathe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations, closing with a promise that they shall know that He is the Lord, and He has not said in vain that He would do this evil to them.
Ezekiel’s pronouncement against Israel’s high places, the very sites of their idolatrous worship, shows that judgment specifically targeted the physical locations most associated with their persistent, ongoing spiritual unfaithfulness. This chapter’s promise that even scattered exiles would eventually remember and loathe their former idolatry reveals that genuine, lasting repentance sometimes requires the sobering distance and perspective that difficult circumstances alone can provide.
