Ezekiel’s magnificent vision closes with the land’s tribal division and a beautiful new name for the city. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Ezekiel 48.
Ezekiel describes the names of the tribes, from the north end, along the borders, one portion for Dan, and next to Dan’s border, one portion for Asher, and one portion for Naphtali, and one portion for Manasseh, describing detailed “boundaries,” “gevul” in Hebrew, for each of the twelve tribes systematically, their portions arranged carefully from north to south across the entire land.
Ezekiel describes the holy oblation reserved in the midst, for the sanctuary, the priests, the Levites, and the city, this holy portion being surrounded by the remaining tribal allotments, describing the city’s dimensions, four thousand five hundred measures on each of its four sides, with suburbs round about it, describing gates on each of the city’s four sides, three on the north, named for Reuben, Judah, and Levi, three on the east, named for Joseph, Benjamin, and Dan, three on the south, named for Simeon, Issachar, and Zebulun, and three on the west, named for Gad, Asher, and Naphtali.
Ezekiel closes this entire extensive vision, and with it the entire book, describing the city’s circumference, eighteen thousand measures, and the name of the city from that day shall be, “The LORD is there,” this beautiful, climactic closing name providing a fitting, hopeful conclusion to this entire extensive, detailed vision, and indeed to the whole book of Ezekiel, affirming that after such extensive judgment, exile, and difficult, sobering prophecy, God’s genuine, lasting, permanent presence among His restored people remained the ultimate, glorious destination toward which this entire remarkable prophetic journey had always been heading.
This entire book’s magnificent closing declaration, the city’s new name simply being The Lord Is There, provides a beautifully fitting climax to Ezekiel’s extensive prophetic journey, moving from God’s glory departing a corrupted temple all the way to His permanent, guaranteed presence in a fully restored one. This final vision’s careful, systematic tribal division reinforces that genuine restoration involves comprehensive, orderly renewal touching every aspect of covenant life, not merely isolated spiritual improvement alone.
