The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Altar” it comes from the Hebrew Word “mizbeach” which means “altar.”
Ezekiel witnesses a life-giving river flowing from the temple, healing everything it touches. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Ezekiel 47.
Ezekiel describes being brought again to the door of the house, and behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward, for the front of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under, from the right side of the house, at the south side of the “altar,” “mizbeach” in Hebrew, this man measuring the water at various points, until it becomes a river he could not pass through, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over.
Ezekiel is told that these waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea, and being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed, and everything shall live wherever the river comes, describing a very great multitude of fish, because these waters come there, for they shall be healed, and everything shall live wherever the river comes, describing fishermen standing upon it from Engedi even to Eneglaim, this being a place to spread forth nets, their fish being of many kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many.
Ezekiel describes trees growing on both sides of the river bank, for food, their leaf not fading, neither their fruit failing, bringing forth new fruit according to their months, because their waters issued out of the sanctuary, their fruit being for food, and their leaf for medicine, closing this vision with a description of the land’s borders and its division among the twelve tribes of Israel, this beautiful vision of a life-giving, healing river flowing from the very temple itself offering a powerful, hopeful picture that Revelation later develops further in its own description of the river of life flowing from God’s throne.
This chapter’s beautiful vision of a healing river, growing progressively deeper and more powerful the further it flows from the temple, offers a stunning picture of God’s presence generating genuine, expanding life and healing throughout the surrounding land and even the sea itself. This vision’s direct connection to Revelation’s own later description of the river of life flowing from God’s throne demonstrates Scripture’s genuine, consistent unity across its many centuries of composition.
