Ezekiel describes when they divide the land by lot for inheritance, they shall offer an oblation to the Lord, a holy portion of the land, its length being twenty-five thousand reeds, and its width ten thousand, this being holy throughout all its “borders,” “gevul” in Hebrew, round about, this holy portion being for the sanctuary, and for the priests who minister to the Lord.
Ezekiel describes a separate portion for the Levites, and for the city, a possession, describing how the prince shall have a portion on the one side and on the other side of the holy oblation, and of the possession of the city, and it shall be the prince’s own possession, so My people shall not be scattered every man from his possession, urging the princes of Israel to remove violence and spoil, and execute judgment and justice, taking away their exactions from His people, using just balances, a just ephah, and a just bath.
Ezekiel describes appointed offerings and feasts, including the Passover, a feast of seven days, unleavened bread being eaten, and detailed instructions for the prince’s offerings during the feast of tabernacles as well, closing with a description of the prince’s continual burnt offerings and other required sacrifices, this chapter’s emphasis on honest business dealing and just rule reinforcing that genuine holiness in worship must always be accompanied by equally genuine justice and honesty in everyday practical, economic dealings among the people.
This chapter’s specific instruction to princes, removing violence and using honest weights and measures, reinforces throughout Ezekiel’s vision that genuine restored worship must be accompanied by equally genuine, practical justice in everyday economic and civic life. Its careful division of holy land alongside practical provision for the city and prince demonstrates that this vision addresses both explicitly sacred worship and ordinary daily governance together as inseparable concerns.
