Ezekiel describes being brought back the way of the gate of the outer sanctuary which looks toward the east, and it was shut, the Lord telling him this gate shall be shut, it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter in by it, because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered in by it, therefore it shall be “shut,” “sagar” in Hebrew, describing how it is for the prince, the prince himself shall sit in it to eat bread before the Lord.
Ezekiel is told to mark well the entering in of the house, with every going forth of the sanctuary, and to say to the rebellious house of Israel, they have had enough of all their abominations, in that they have brought strangers, uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, to be in His sanctuary to pollute it, describing how they have broken His covenant because of all their abominations, and they have not kept the charge of His holy things, but have set keepers of His charge in the sanctuary for themselves.
Ezekiel describes specific instructions for the Levites who went astray from Him when Israel went astray, they shall bear their iniquity, and shall not come near to Him, to do the office of a priest to Him, nor to come near any of His holy things, in the most holy place, but they shall bear their shame, describing how the priests, the Levites, the sons of Zadok, who kept the charge of His sanctuary when the children of Israel went astray from Him, they shall come near to Him to minister to Him, and they shall stand before Him to offer to Him the fat and the blood, closing with detailed instructions regarding their garments, their marriages, and their conduct, ensuring genuine, careful holiness in every aspect of restored priestly service.
This chapter’s provision that the east gate remain permanently shut, since the Lord Himself entered through it, offers a striking, tangible marker permanently commemorating that specific, sacred moment of God’s glorious return. Its careful distinction between the faithful sons of Zadok and the Levites who previously went astray demonstrates that genuine restoration still maintained real accountability, distinguishing between consistent faithfulness and past compromise even within restored service.
