Ezekiel performs a series of strange, symbolic acts portraying Jerusalem’s coming siege. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Ezekiel 4.
Ezekiel is instructed to take a tile, lay it before him, and portray upon it the city, even Jerusalem, laying siege against it, building a fort against it, casting a mount against it, setting camps also against it, and setting battering rams against it round about, taking an iron “pan,” “machavat” in Hebrew, and setting it as a wall of iron between him and the city, setting his face against it, and it shall be besieged, this being a sign to the house of Israel.
Ezekiel is instructed to lie on his left side, and lay the iniquity of the house of Israel upon it, according to the number of the days he lies upon it, he shall bear their iniquity, three hundred ninety days, according to the number of years of their iniquity, and when he has accomplished them, he shall lie again on his right side, and bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days, one day for a year.
Ezekiel is instructed to prepare bread with strange, unclean ingredients, wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt mixed together, baking it with dung for fuel, symbolizing the defiled bread the children of Israel shall eat among the Gentiles where He will drive them, being instructed to eat by weight, twenty shekels a day, and drink water by measure, the sixth part of a hin, eating his bread from time to time, this being God’s remarkable, extensive object lesson depicting the coming, severe famine conditions that would afflict Jerusalem during her prolonged, devastating siege.
Ezekiel’s extensive, unusual symbolic acts, lying on his side for over a year and eating carefully rationed, defiled bread, demonstrate genuine prophetic obedience requiring real, sustained personal sacrifice rather than merely convenient, momentary demonstration. This detailed, embodied enactment of Jerusalem’s coming siege communicates the coming judgment’s genuine severity through lived experience rather than merely abstract verbal warning alone.
