EZEKIEL 39 ‐ “The Defeat of Gog”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Bow” it comes from the Hebrew Word “qeshet” which means “bow.”

Ezekiel describes Gog’s massive, decisive defeat and Israel’s genuine restoration afterward. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Ezekiel 39.

Ezekiel continues prophesying against Gog, telling him He is against him, and will turn him back, and leave but the sixth part of him, and will cause him to come up from the north parts, and bring him upon the mountains of Israel, describing how He will smite his “bow,” “qeshet” in Hebrew, out of his left hand, and will cause his arrows to fall out of his right hand, and he shall fall upon the mountains of Israel, he and all his bands. Ezekiel describes how He will give him to the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field, to be devoured, he shall fall upon the open field, describing how He will send a fire on Magog, and among those who dwell securely in the isles, and they shall know that He is the Lord, and His holy name He will make known in the midst of His people Israel, describing how the house of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years. Ezekiel describes how they shall bury Gog and all his multitude, cleansing the land, seven months shall the house of Israel be burying them, that they may cleanse the land, closing with God’s promise to gather the house of Jacob again from their captivity, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for His holy name, describing how they shall bear their shame, and all their trespasses by which they have trespassed against Him, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid, closing with a promise that He will not hide His face any more from them, for He has poured out His spirit upon the house of Israel, this dramatic, decisive victory demonstrating God’s ultimate, unshakeable commitment to protecting and restoring His genuinely repentant people.

This chapter’s extensive detail, weapons burned for seven years and bodies buried for seven months, illustrates the sheer, overwhelming scale of Gog’s decisive, comprehensive defeat, communicated through concrete, vivid numbers rather than mere vague description. Its closing promise, that God will no longer hide His face since He has poured out His Spirit upon Israel, offers genuine assurance that this decisive victory would usher in lasting, permanent restoration rather than merely temporary relief.
