EZEKIEL 38 ‐ “Gog and Magog”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Magog” it comes from the Hebrew Word “Magog” which means “Magog, a nation or region.”

Ezekiel prophesies against a mysterious future coalition led by Gog, from the land of Magog. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Ezekiel 38.

Ezekiel is instructed to set his face against Gog, the land of “Magog,” “Magog” in Hebrew, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, describing how He will bring him forth, and all his army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armor, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords, Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya being with them, and Gomer and all his bands, describing how after many days he shall be visited, in the latter years he shall come into the land brought back from the sword. Ezekiel describes how this coalition shall ascend and come like a storm, they shall cover the land like a cloud, to be against His people, to take a spoil, and to take a prey, to turn his hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people gathered out of the nations, who have gotten cattle and goods, who dwell in the midst of the land, asking whether he has come to take a spoil, to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil. Ezekiel describes God’s response, that in that day His fury shall come up in His face, for in His jealousy and in the fire of His wrath He has spoken, describing a great shaking in the land of Israel, so that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men who are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at His presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground, describing how He will call for a sword against him throughout all His mountains, closing with His declaration that He will magnify Himself, and sanctify Himself, and He will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that He is the Lord.

This mysterious prophecy against Gog and Magog, describing a massive future coalition assembled against God’s restored people, has generated extensive discussion across Christian history regarding its precise fulfillment while consistently affirming its central message, that God ultimately protects and vindicates His people against even the most overwhelming, coordinated opposition. Its vivid description of creation itself trembling at God’s presence reinforces that His power genuinely exceeds any human military coalition, however massive or well-coordinated it might initially appear.
