Ezekiel is instructed to prophesy to the mountains of Israel, telling them that because the enemy has said against them, “Aha,” and the ancient high places are theirs in possession, He is jealous for them with a great “jealousy,” “qinah” in Hebrew, promising He has lifted up His hand, that the heathen who are around them shall bear their own shame, but the mountains of Israel shall shoot forth their branches, and yield their fruit to His people of Israel, for they are at hand to come.
Ezekiel delivers a magnificent, extended promise of restoration, “For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean… A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes.”
Ezekiel describes how they shall dwell in the land He gave to their fathers, and they shall be His people, and He will be their God, He will also save them from all their uncleannesses, and He will call for the corn, and increase it, and lay no famine upon them, He will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that they shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen, then they shall remember their own evil ways, and their doings that were not good, and shall loathe themselves in their own sight, closing with God’s reminder that He does not do this for their sakes, but for His holy name’s sake, which they have profaned among the heathen, and He will be sanctified in them before their eyes.
Ezekiel’s magnificent promise, sprinkling clean water and replacing the stony heart with a heart of flesh, offers one of the Old Testament’s most vivid, beautiful pictures of genuine spiritual transformation reaching to the very core of human nature. God’s honest reminder that He acts for His own name’s sake rather than Israel’s merit keeps genuine humility central even amid such extraordinary, generous promises of restoration and renewal.
