Ezekiel is instructed to set his face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against it, telling it that He is against it, and will stretch out His hand against it, and make it most desolate, laying its cities waste, and it shall know that He is the Lord, describing how because it has had a perpetual “hatred,” “eyvah” in Hebrew, and has shed the blood of the children of Israel by the force of the sword in the time of their calamity, in the time that their iniquity had an end.
Ezekiel describes how because Edom has said, these two nations and these two countries shall be his, and he shall possess it, though the Lord was there, therefore He will do according to his anger and according to his envy which he has used out of his hatred against them, and He will make Himself known among them, when He has judged him, describing how he shall know that He is the Lord, since he has heard all his blasphemies which he has spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, they are laid desolate, they are given to consume.
Ezekiel closes describing how because Edom has rejoiced at the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so He will do to him, he shall be desolate, Mount Seir, and all Edom, even all of it, and they shall know that He is the Lord, this brief but pointed oracle demonstrating that persistent, opportunistic hostility toward God’s people, sustained across generations rather than being merely momentary, carried genuine, lasting moral consequence requiring real, comprehensive judgment in response.
Ezekiel’s judgment against Edom for its perpetual hatred, sustained specifically during Israel’s most vulnerable moments of calamity, reveals that exploiting another’s genuine crisis carries particularly serious moral weight beyond ordinary hostility alone. This chapter’s connection between Edom’s blasphemous mocking words and the resulting judgment demonstrates that careless, gloating speech about others’ suffering carries genuine consequence rather than remaining merely inconsequential talk.
